PPA Profile: Courtland Peterson

Meet Ms. P

Headshot of Parker Performing Arts Direct or Dance, Courtland Peterson

Courtland Peterson (Ms. P) joined the faculty at Parker Performing Arts in 2017. She is the Director and Dance Teacher for middle school ballet, jazz and fitness. Ms. P earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance and her K-12 public school teaching certification at the University of Arizona after training with the American Ballet Theatre and the Bolshoi Ballet.

Ms. P, what attracted you to PPA?

“PPA is a place for me to share my knowledge, creativity, and passion.  Dancers here experience their art form in a supportive and enjoyable environment.”

What important skills are you teaching through dance?

“Dancers need to gain confidence and an appreciation in their own abilities. As they gain these skills and knowledge their self-assurance grows. They take responsibility for developing self-discipline and engaging in the hard work that are prerequisites for achieving not only in their artistic endeavors, but in life.”

What is most satisfying about teaching at PPA?

“PPA is continuously evolving. We’re searching for the newest, the best, and the most exciting ways to teach and challenge our students. The pride I feel in the PPA dancers is inexplicable. It’s not only watching them improve their skills and then perform on stage; it’s seeing them grasp the understanding that their efforts lead to achievements in all aspects of their lives. To me, that’s the best and most important lesson I can teach.”

6 Parker Performing Arts Middle School dance students perform Spooktacular on stage.

No audition is required to attend PPA where dance is taught at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Two hundred students are currently enrolled in the dance program. There’s nothing like it in a Colorado public school, especially in a K-8 tuition-free school.
